Microchip themselves say that unused peripheral registers can
be used as storage space. And why not - they just RAM. But
sometimes I'd not trust Microchip if they said GPRs could be
used for storage

You might get hit from behind in a dark alley one day if you
don't test thoroughly. For example, registers like ADRES
*shouldn't* change on their own and *should* be safe to use
