Heating decreases the hfe, which causes more heating etc. Those old things are horrific compared to modern Si transistors.. slow as molasses, leaky, limited temperature range, very limited power dissipation. Some of the old painted glass grease-filled parts could have the black paint scratched off and then they could be used as a terrible phototransist= or rather than a terrible transistor.
