I don't use that PIC, but I don't think that it wakes up=20 instantly. If you take a look at the oscillator block diagram, you=20 will probably see a 1024 cycle delay that is enforced anytime you=20 select any of the crystal oscillator options. And, as far as I know,=20 you have to select one of the crystal options if you want to feed an=20 external clock source into the PIC. I *could* be wrong, though.
