I recall reading about a small company that developed a PDP-11 on a
chip to replace PDP-11's that were used in industrial control
applications.

In any case, the MSP430 comes very close to the PDP-11.  TI basically
lopped off the more advanced addressing modes in favor doubling the
number of registers.
