I have also had the same problem that the OP has regarding corrupt
received data with a Prolific device. Like others have mentioned here,
Prolific (or their clones) have poor reputations.

I have never had this issue with an FTDI device, however. I would
recommend trying one of them out.

Do let us know if setting the 9th bit high to act as another stop bit
solves the problem.
