Sometimes you don't know until after the fact, which would
apply to people without prior experience of that offset. So

Not so long ago I needed to replace the rose on the shower. I
bought the same brand, same model, same colour, everything

But they'd changed a very minor detail by about a mm, meaning
you couldn't just replace the old with the new. If you didn't have
a few tools (and a bolshie attitude !!!) you'd have to also buy the
wall fitting, for an extra $70

There are any number of companies which make products that
are incompatible with anything else. I guess the trick is bailing
out early if you don't like that arrangement or think the products
aren't special enough to warrant the expense
