For all my web development work I've been using jQuery. It's an
excellent javascript library for cross-browser DOM (document object
model) manipulation, and AJAX work. The only downside is it's quite
heavy. The version I have been using (not sure if it's the latest) is
90KB.

There's plenty of how-to and beginner topics on jQuery on the web. I
also use www.stackoverflow.com almost daily.
