The lack of "easy" interface certainly is a factor. That said, there are VERY few reasons for a hobby type project to need more then what SD cards cheaply provide, and since they are so simple to interface to I'd say most hobbyists haven't even considered SATA devices. My first data storage hobby project started out with an IDE interface. Reason being that flash cards were too expensive what what I wanted, and I had lots of IDE drives lying around. It wasn't long before I switched to CF cards (which have an IDE interface mode). Not long after that my projects started using SD cards. To this day I haven't considered going back to hard drives, SD cards are so cheap and plentiful.
