The need is independent of the difficulties. eg the ability to field backup large Flash cards requires things bigger than large flash cards (or large amounts of money). Backup to laptop is possible, and is the general option, but something more portable is better. Other options that SATA exist but ... I can generate in excess of 50 GB of photo files on a "good" day (unusual). With ever rising file sizes this may grow. (Wedding - 3000 + photos all up. RAW + JPEG at say 20 MB/photo =3D 60 GB.) Fastest current CF cards are around 100 MB (not Mb) per second. These are unusual and very expensive, but this years expensive is 2 years or so's everyday.
