The multi-card reader I have has a Realtek RTS5161 controller in
it. A 600MB file downloaded via USB from the HDD to the card
takes only 83 seconds, a transfer/write rate of > 7MB/s

Sometime I will put the analyser on it to see exactly how it does that.
Presumably it will be in the native 4-bit mode
