Heat is the number one killer of hard disk= s! That said, I run WD Green drives mounted on rails in 5.25" bays in an old full-size desktop case and the power supply fans are sufficient to keep everything cool. The fans (one intake, one exhaust) in the power supply are temperature controlled and never seem to run above their lowest settings.
