FTDI do their devices in some really handy form factors. For example you=20
can get them built into a USB plug (with either TTL level or RS232 level=20
outputs) which is really handy if you have a board with a serial header=20
on it and want a single cable soloution to hook up your laptop. You can=20
also get them built into a module that is a drop in replacement for a=20
PCB mount D connector.   I haven't noticed anything similar from other=20
vendors but I haven't really been looking for it.

OTOH microchip do their chips in easier to solder packages.
