Maybe go for 30 x 0.5W rather than  15 x 1W LEDs?

Either is doable  evenly  I think, and I would assume that about 15W of=20
LEDs might be enough. Russell would have a better idea

3.5" is not a bad depth even for some natural spread of the LED=20
illumination from inbuilt lens
