In this case the PIC pulling the gate low did not always turn it off=20 (verified ~0v at gate, but still conducting). In addition it would=20 occasionally turn itself on. Turning itself on "occasionally" was likely caused by my ICSP, rather=20 than anything else. However I did not realise this at the time.
