If it's a 5V PIC (or other) it may work. If it's a 3V PIC (or whatever) it will work anywhere from poor to well from device to device. The 2N7000 and family is much used in this sort of context but is very marginally rate. Vgs_th - the voltage that the FET just turns on at is 0.8 / 2.1 / 3 Volt min / typical / max. Design should ALWAYS be for worst case spec which in this case is 3V. That spec is at 1 mA with Vgs =3D Vds. ie with 3V on the gate you may get 1 mA current and 3V Vds for an on resistance of V/R =3D 3000 ohms. These are "typical" curves - worst case is worse. Performance a Vgs =3D 3V is utterly pathetic - you'd be better off driving your LED with the skin off a rice pudding. At 4V drive it's coming right abd at 5V drive it has 2 ohm on resistance up to about 500 mA Ids, and wont allow more than about 750 mA come what may. Use of a true logic level FET will make driving and design far far far easi= er. The only redeeming features of the 2N7000 family are low price and a useful 60 V Vdsmax. Many many many better FETs exist - and very few worse ones. If you can find them the CES23xx (CES2310 my workhorse) are stunningly good logic FETs. CES2310 is rated at 30V and 4.8A with Vgsth of about a gnat's breath.
