I have witnessed the=20 situation where a late 1980's Chevrolet overheated with the thermostat=20 removed and worked ok with a new thermostat installed. The mechanic said=20 the water needed to go slower through the radiator. I never understood=20 the situation but it did work... More personal experience: Burned exhaust valves lead to running richer=20 which then leads to fuel still burning in the exhaust manifold. Just=20 more heat than the system can handle.
