Not suprisingly I'm sure, I've had a number of thoughts along vaguely similar lines. Some may even yet see the light of day. Perhaps. If I was buying one of these it would only be the programmable one. The other is "just anoter flashlight", albeit with a nice case. Cree LED is good. Not enough detail on electronics that I could see at a glance. Open everything is good, but seeing what they are doing in the control department early on may even make life better for them.
