If I get hooted whilst riding my bike I also tend to give a friendly wave back in case it's somebody I know :) In fact this has turned out to be a very good tactic, given that more often than not I find it's either somebody being friendly and helpful, or is actually somebody I know (I have to admit to tooting as I overtake cyclists I know).
