Not not fancy. Not simple Anything DESIGNED to filter out particles far smaller than its pore size tends to demand respect and $. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HEPA You can however do various things which come "close enough" at OK [tm] pric= e. Airliners (they say) do HEPA filtration on cabin air. Some trick - but whatever they do use would almost certainly offer excellent performance per size. You can buy water filter elements at about the 1 to 2 micron rating. These would be a good start. If attempting to filter air incoming to flat: Unless you are specifically intending to ward off a local biological attack or to be safe from European vegetables it is probably unwise to live too much of your life in a HEPA filtered environment. In the real world you probably do better off eating dirt from an early age and not being too too fastidious about hygiene. (Too fastidious is OK). Exposure to various pathogens encourages your body to fend for itself (as they presumably have or will taught/teach you). The more greeblies you hide from the more likely it is that one you do meet will harm you. Within reason. If object is to filter vacuum outlet dust then something less than HEPA will help. The really enthused may decide to fit a cyclonic separator which can offer results indistinguishable from magic when used in conjunction with a fairly modest filter.
