That's why I generally use a software RAID1 setup, even in a laptop.
It's not supposed to replace a backup, but helps better than a backup in
the case of drive failure.=20

Unluckily not all laptops have a bay for a 2nd drive, but luckily the
external buses are now mostly fast enough for using an external drive as
mirror.
