> Strange ...... the world ended here Never mistake correlation for causation. FWIW: We here are where every day 1st starts **. Samoa is going to be in the happy situation of being notionally being where every day starts and actually being where yesterday* finishes. Russell * Relative to NZ. ** Every day 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ... starts in an infinitude of other places, or 24 if you only count 1 hour time zones, or up to 48 if you allow 1/2 hour divisions (which NZ needs due a permanent 1/2 hour of daylight saving to misalign us with Britain.) If you count in whole minutes, every day has about 1440 starts, and 86400 if you count by quanta of seconds. This is all very shaky as Tonga promotes itself a whole day and a bit, Samoa is now approximately following suit. We (NZ) are so far satisfied to move ourselves Eastwards 30 minutes at all times (to make it easier to work out what time it is in Britain) *** and by an additional 60 minutes from much of Summer. China discards all its time zones bar one but fortunately is far enough from the date line to not confuse people, except for those in eg Urumqi, who must get up in the dark and go to bed really early if the wish to toe the party line. Thos planning to catch an early flight out of Urumqi can be in for a nasty surprise when they work out what time they'll have to get up to catch it (ask me how I know :-) ). *** This has seriously confused some people at potentially critical moments. NZ was THE 1st country in the world to declare war on Nazi Germany as 'we' thought it was 11am in Britain when it was in fact only 9am. We declared war at 9am UK time and Winniw and friends did so at 11am, following our lead 2 hours later. The NZ army official website will lie to you about this, reason unknown. --=20 http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
