Why bother with detecting zero-crossing point at all?  Most AC control syst=
ems
use triac to switch the load, just use a triac driver with zero-cross detec=
tion
built in, something like MOC3043 or similar.  Search mouser.com for "zero
crossing". Then, on the PIC side, it becomes regular PWM with long period.=
