The price of natural gas dropped sharply a while back, causing many people using oil to switch. A couple years later it spiked and oil was cheaper. Even if you have a gas main out in the street, bringing the line into the house after the fact can be obscenely expensive. With high efficiency oil furnaces, even here in the frozen north it would take decades to recover the cost of conversion, even though natural gas is *currently* less expensive.
