OK, I've opened it up (and taken pictures along the way) -- the voltage of a "fully charged" battery is 4.13V (as close to fully charged as I can get it -- never finishing charging is one of the symptoms), so I'll assume it i= s a Lipo cell. And, yes, it does have protection electronics (very tiny). There are no markings underneath the "shrink wrap" on the battery itself. If anyone is interested in the pictures, let me know.
