Since it's now evident to me that the result is packed BCD, obviously=20 the comments are accurate. Anyhow, we can all move on, nothing to see now as I now understand the=20 original code and now have a version that has only one in and one out=20 parameter and does unpacked BCD. I was fairly sure the example code did what I wanted, more or less,=20 rather than the daft /10,000 %10,000 etc in the JAL format library.
