If inputs are going to be out of your control at some time it
probably is a good idea to have reasonable protection. It's
something I do whenever possible, and it's paid off a couple
of times, saving repairs. For example someone who thought
an SX RTCC counter would count more reliably if they used
a 12V signal instead of 5V. Yeah, I know. But they did anyway

At the very least it will give you some peace of mind
