As far as I know all started with the BeNeLux countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands). I remember I saw this first in 1982 and it was so strange, crossing the Netherland to Belgium without stopping and checking our passports (you still had to stop at every other EU countries by that time). I guess the whole EU thing is going to end up somewhere close where US is right now: Crossing a state without the need of a passport, free trade and move, same currency etc. Personally I enjoy driving through Europe nowadays, much faster than was before, when you had to queue up for hours at the borders...
