> Me too - I love the early Cream/Peter Green/Stones/Floyd sounds I think historically the UK didn't have a guitar like the Fender. Hank Marvin tells the story of importing the first Strat to get the rock'n'roll US sound of Buddy Holly, Bill Haley etc. I'd guess that most guitars in UK use at the time would be semi-acoustics, which Fender didn't make but Gibson and others did. Possibly the larger body of the Les Paul has more sustain than the lighter Fender, and sounds more like a semi-acoustic, which blues and jazz players of the time would have been used to. I always think of Gibson as more "English" than Fender As mostly a bass player I prefer the SG-style EB-3. Having short arms - they barely reach my hands - I can't manage a Precision. I'm restoring it at the moment and adding active tone controls > much US stuff such as Hendrix, Lynard Skynard (used to enjoy > covering Voodoo Chile and Freebird :-) ) and Neil Young. Early > Blues influences for me were Robert Johnson, Howlin Wolf, BB > King, JL Hooker - plenty of great stuff to learn there I'll be in touch off-list about players of yore you probably haven't heard but should have ;-) --=20 http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
