Canon seems to be getting a bit better at this, at least on some of their lines. I have a G10 and a G12. The G10 is around 16 megapixels, and the G12 is 10.something (off the top of my head). The G12 has astoundingly better low light capability, and I'm really happy with it. These aren't the level of DSLRs, but they're a step above the average point and shoot too.
