I thought that that was a great plus, because the project I was developing used a CPLD and it would be great to use a single connector to program all the devices in the board. BUT the first documentation (errata) released by Microchip stated that the JTAG was not operational in the first devices and would be fixed in the future. We are already in the future now, and I never heard from Microchip of JTAG programming. I think that for the PIC32 it is a different matter because their core is MIPS, which perhaps knows how to do a JTAG interface correctly.
