It's done to simplify the system =20 > (less components). On a 1998 Mustang I had it also meant two different types of spark plugs - positive and negative! They wanted to platinize the plugs, but wanted to save a little money and platinized the main electrode on half of them and the ground electrode on the others. Note to self: get double platinum plugs to save having to figure out which is which!
