They go way beyond collaborative development; I use source control for
all my work, even personal stuff.  With a source control system you have
a permanent, unchangeable picture of the source at various stages
through the development and a file difference operation is a couple of
clicks away between different versions of each file. Zip archives simply
don't give you this security and convenience.

I think that is typical of someone who hasn't used source control much.
I didn't like using it either (and tbh I still don't like learning new
tools much), but as you get comfortable with using these systems you
will see what a useful and important part of the development process
they are.
