With a source control system you have a permanent, unchangeable picture of the source at various stages through the development and a file difference operation is a couple of clicks away between different versions of each file. I didn't like using it either (and tbh I still don't like learning new tools much), but as you get comfortable with using these systems you will see what a useful and important part of the development process they are.
