Nobody is suggesting that he not eventually try making his own scope. However, it is foolish to think that one is going to lash up a scope in a few days, with no budget and no additional scope to debug the design. I tried doing this back when I was 18 years old and while I did learn some things, it took me months and I did not succeed, mainly because I lacked a scope to check my design.
