I'll second the use of speak-on connectors, we use them for battery pack connections and they get used by emergency service workers who, quite rightly, have more on their minds than connector care at the time. We've not had any problems with them being broken after having a few dozen out in the field for two years or so. XLR connectors are > available from 2 to 7 pins I'll second XLR, it's tough and widely availiable and some of the neurtrik ones (current ratings vary by both pin count and which range you select) meet the original posters specs, other brands probablly do too.
