I wrote a couple of weeks ago asking for ideas how to easily set up=20 something that would synchronize several folders between several of=20 my computers both over my local network at work as well as my=20 machines at home via Internet. I thank everyone for their suggestions. I should mention here that I'm primarily concerned with Windows=20 machines. Although I dabble a tiny bit with Linux, I don't work with it I *really * like the simplicity of Dropbox. I've been using the free=20 version (2.25GB) for several months now. The problem is that I want=20 to automatically synchronize my Books and Magazines folder which=20 currently sits at about 17GB. I'm just tired of doing it manually. The problem with Dropbox is the price of the paid-for=20 subscriptions. Their smallest package costs $100 yearly for 50GB=20 ($10 monthly). I guess that I'm a cheapskate - that's just too much money. So: I went looking for alternatives. Boy oh boy - their are a lot of choic= es! However, I found a package called SugarSync. Their free package is=20 5GB (2.5 times larger than Dropbox) and, although they don't=20 currently support Linux, they support pretty much every smartphone=20 format available. Seriously cool. Their paid plans seem a bit more reasonable as well. You get more=20 storage for the same dollars as Dropbox ($100 yearly for 60GB) *BUT*=20 they also offer a smaller plan of $50 yearly for 30GB. I signed up=20 for the SugarSync 30GB plan after reviewing the other similar=20 programs that I had found. So far, so good. Both Dropbox and SugarSync have been around for a=20 number of years and I really couldn't find much in the way of complaints. Anyway, part of this post is to ask a favor of as many people as=20 possible. Both Dropbox and SugarSync have a referral program where=20 both people (me and you) get a bonus for every new subscriber. For=20 Dropbox, the bonus is 250MB. That is: if you click on the referral=20 link that I'll show below in just a bit, both you and I get an extra=20 250MB free storage. The Dropbox referral link is SugarSync is even better. From late last year until the end of=20 March, they have double bonuses. For someone signing up for the free=20 5GB package, both you and I get an extra 500MB free storage. If=20 someone signs up for any of the paid-for packages, both you and I get=20 a whopping 10GB free storage. Note that the 10GB extra storage is only for someone who signs up for=20 a paid-for package right off the bat. Signing up for the free=20 package, then upgrading to a paid package does NOT get either of us=20 the extra 9.5GB storage. The SugarSync referral link is=20 Do note that you can sign up for a paid-for package and down-grade to=20 the free package at any time within the first 30 days without=20 incurring any cost at all. However, the 10GB bonus is not given=20 until after the first billing period has elapsed and at least one=20 payment has been made. As far as I can tell, all bonuses from both Dropbox and SugarSync are=20 perpeptual. That is: you don't lose them at the end of a year. I=20 have support requests into both organizations to find out for sure. Finally, note that if you sign up to either Dropbox or SugarSync=20 WITHOUT using the referral links above, you do NOT get the extra=20 (bonus) storage. That means that your initial Dropbox free storage=20 is 2.0GB rather than 2.25GB and your initial SugarSync storage is=20 5.0GB instead of 5.5GB (free) or 30GB instead of 40GB (the smallest=20 paid-for package they offer). In closing, I should mention that both Dropbox and SugarSync play=20 well together on the same computer. I'm running both packages on 5=20 machines currently (including my Windows Home Server v1 box at home)=20 and everything stays in sync without any issues. As usual, I'm eager to hear opinions and suggestions. And if any of=20 you click on the referral links above, you have my thanks! dwayne --=20 Dwayne Reid Trinity Electronics Systems Ltd Edmonton, AB, CANADA (780) 489-3199 voice (780) 487-6397 fax www.trinity-electronics.com Custom Electronics Design and Manufacturing --=20 http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist .
