'battery' is the noun I'm not really the grammar buff, but isn't the "12-volt" an attributive noun (but still a noun)? Something like "three-year sentence" or "car dealer". This also explains the singular (common for noun adjuncts), differently from a "battery with a voltage of 12 volts".
