I'm not sure, but I think that diesel engines are more efficient than gasoline engines because of the cycle it uses (the Diesel Cycle is closer to the Carnot Cycle than the Otto Cycle). Would it be advantageous to make an engine burning gasoline but running on the Diesel Cycle? The compression ratio could be much increased without early-detonation because there is no fuel inside the cylinder in the compression stroke. Isn't the water-injection trick used to allow higher compression ratio so the efficiency increases?
