Pot cores which come apart in 2 halves are available. Each half can have it=

coil and they couple quite strongly when near enough. Will you add a rectif=
ier
and a cap in each piece to keep the led lit longer once turned on? The led =
would
go out as soon as lifted off the board currently. If this is a one off pres=
tige
project I'd try to go all the way with a 10F PIC in each figure playing RFI=
D
tx/rx and controlling the LED too. Maybe later you can move on to self prop=
elled
figures which actually fight :) Remember Battle Chess?
