It's still RF in nature, even though a "normal" devices range is only 10-30cm, it isn't too difficult to build something that can hear the signal from MUCH farther away, especially considering the frequencies involved. People thought Bluetooth would be safer for the same reason, then people built antennas and hardware and were sniffing Bluetooth traffic from hundreds of meters away.
