It is not clearer that the USB stack issue is still a jungle of more or les= s working options. I have written host side USB code before and I have no pro= blem with that but chasing unnamed bugs in firmware libraries which have suppose= dly been out there and in common use for more than 5 years is gross, exactly as= it was when USB came out, and as it continues to be. Interestingly, Mchip's 'o= ld' USB low cost peripheral chip the PIC16C745, is used by many makers, includi= ng Velleman (in kits like K8055 - an IO expander), and Microchip (in some of t= heir low cost development boards). Besides being OTP only, with no JW version fo= r development, it costs almost twice as much as a PIC18F14J50.
