I might be mistaken, but I was always under the impression that the USB power pin is not just about power -- it's also important for initializing a connection. Isn't that one reason that the power/ground pins are longer than the data pins in the connector? Every chip that supports USB that I've worked with so far has a pin dedicated to USB power sensing. Isn't that tru= e of PICs?
