In production, they operate stand-alone with code in the SD card. The user just selects the product being built and then programs the part. We do a fair amount of SQTP programming (for the two LSB of MAC addresses), and these support that. They have been very reliable except once when MPLAB wanted to do an update and killed the programmer. Microchip replaced it.
