I wire wrapped a chip with a bunch of 1kx4 RAMs and a Motorola MIKBUG ROM. I used the 6800 cross assembler at The Source, an early consumer oriented time share service. I built a 300bps modem and dialed from San Luis Obispo CA to Ventura CA, the closest Telenet dial-in point. On weekends I paid $7 per hour for the phone call and $5 per hour for use of the Source.
