Does it need to be a true sine wave, or would general wiggling around of
about the right magnitude and frequency be good enough as long as you know
exactly where the box is?  What I'm thinking of is a circular motion added
to the linear track motion.  That will be a lot simpler mechanically than a
true reciprocating sine, but you still know exactly where the box is at all
times.
