Nowdays you can get "very small" devices in both crystal and resonator =20 style. Far smaller than HC49 footprints. The latest version of the Arduino board ("uno") adds a dual-footprint =20 for an SMT resonator to the old-style HC49 crystal. The resonator =20 fits entirely between the pins of the crystal, and doesn't require =20 caps; it's MUCH smaller. (OTOH, there are much smaller-than-HC49 =20 crystals available as well.) http://arduino.cc/en/uploads/Main/ArduinoUnoFront.jpg (shows one of each; crystal for the USB converter, resonator next the =20 the main cpu.)
