We once supplied the biometric identification equipment for a
high-security prison and I got acquainted with the guys that were
installing the X-Ray equipment.

They explained to me some of the details, and one interesting fact is
that the equipment can distinguish between metals, organic material,
etc, showing them in different colors on-screen.

It appears that it uses not only the amount of absorption to do it, but
perhaps also diffraction, scattering, etc.
