The whole milk float topic got me remembering too. At age 13 I started work= ing Saturdays helping deliver milk around the Portswood area, touching on S= waythling and Highfield areas of Southampton. Started at 5.30am, finished a= bout 2pm and got paid a quid. I spent it all on electronics - designing and= making analogue synthesizers. By the end of the round, the float was runni= ng pretty slowly. Had a couple of steep hills to climb which I would someti= mes get out and walk. The round was arranged such that we were carrying as = many empties as possible without having to double back on ourselves. I reme= mber once that a axle broke under the load of one of the hills on Christmas= Eve - always a very busy day for the milkman but the tips were good :) I did the round for about 2 years before moving to working Saturdays at an = electronics store. The 50% discounted on parts and 14 quid pay ramped up my= rate of making stuff :) =20 On 2010-10-21, at 2:01 PM, ivp wrote: >> Not only did we have the RACS (never let Unigate darken the >> doorstep) deliver the milk, there was also Clark's the bakers with >> his large wicker basket and fantastically hot (as in spicy) ginger >> cake (all in electric vehicles). >=20 > My very first 'job' was helping dad's neighbour do his Sunday > morning milk round in rural Saltash (Cornwall).
