It gets grey.
When you have a number of similar orhanisms all working together in
the same "soup" then a protein or whatever expressed by one may well
affect another. The quickest of quick skims of that paper that I cited
and the original press statement suggested to me that  they included
inter organism transfer  - but that impression may be wrong.
