Without wanting to show too much ignorance in this matter. Isn't it likely that there is a proxy involved. This will pass the 443 traffic as it is normally encrfypted anyway, but the port 80 traffic may be being checked in some way? Are any other ports open? - I have had a similar problem & have found port 21 (FTP) and 22 (SSH/VPN ?) have also been left open. Sometimes port 23 (Telnet) is also available.
