No great magic - but all useful. PFM & PWM combo IC best for low quiescent current at low load current drains. True output disconnect useful. Where low current regulated standby voltage is not needed, turn off output feedback voltage divider. Where say 2V is needed to run eg PIC in standby have PIC sleep with SMPS of= f then burst on SMPS with processor to top up psu cap. They say only 750 nS burst needed to recharge from 2V to 3.3V at under 10 uA load. Some other, but that seems to be the main wisdom. IC is synchronous buck which helps. Even then max efficincy is only slight;= y over 95% best case.
